The poor guys in NEEDTOBREATHE had a misadventure with their trailer the other night. Below is bassist Seth Bolt's account of the trailer mishap...
Trailer of Wrath: The Final Chapter We leave Charleston and from exhaustion I go to sleep in my bunk, expecting to wake up close to Des Moines, IA. Well I woke up feeling the bus backing up and hearing trucks still passing on the side of the road. Fearing the worst but hoping for the best I climbed out of my bunk and walked forward to see what was going on. As I opened the door of the bus so that I could figure out exactly what was happening outside, the sound of the door hitting metal startled me out of my sleepy stupor. I looked out the window and see dark sky, trees in the distance, and a guardrail that was very very close to the bus. Climbing out of the window because the door did not open I walked down the side of the road seeing an abnormally large gap between the bus and the trailer as well as Bear and Bo giving Joe directions as he was backing the bus up towards the trailer. In full disbelief I look at our wonderful trailer buried in the guardrail. My first thought was "Oh My," followed closely by, "I just built that awesome shelf."
After unloading the trailer, using every person with us to lift the trailer we got the trailer back on the hitch. We all climbed back into the bus and continued, very slowly down the road to the nearest truck stop. Arriving there I got out of the bus and rewired the trailer, cut off the broken fender and fueled up the bus. After departing the gas station I, finally resting for a minute, asked "What happened?" Bo opted to be the person to explain the event as he was also the driver, who handled the whole ordeal great. It seems that while cruising down the interstate at 4 am Bo noticed a bit of a shake in the bus. Looking into the mirrors towards the back he suddenly realized that sparks had started shooting out of each side of the back of the bus. Knowing that we should stop as soon as possible his first thought was to slam on the brakes. It's not the best idea to slam on the brakes if there is an uncontrollable object trailing behind you, so he chose to slowly decelerate as the trailer, still sparking, slowed down behind as well. The trailer must have gone at least 1/4 mile until it went to a crashing stop in a guardrail that actually saved the trailer from falling into the fifteen foot ditch to the side of the road.
We seemed to have shaken our bad luck now. We have survived and we are very thankful for the fact that nothing worse happened. If you did happen to be driving towards Indianapolis at around 4 am and you saw sparks coming off of a trailer not attached to anything, they were not fireworks. Also if you happened to see 5 or 6 guys on the side of the road unloading gear from a trailer and lifting like they were in a world's strongest man competition that was us as well.
We are back on the road safe now, although our trailer is not as attractive as it used to be. Hopefully we will see you all soon as I know that many many miles and shows are coming during the rest of this year.
